Titanium Tool Selection

Use 4 Flute X-Series Tools when:

  • Removing material left from drills
  • Helical Boring
  • Corner Processing
  • Making heavier cuts with more surface contact
  • 25% X,Y step-over
  • 200 SFM 15 ipm average.

Use XF 6, 8, or 10 flutes:

  • High speed finishing cuts
  • Strong cutting edges
  • Superior finishes
  • Various corner radii as standard
  • 2% to 10% X,Y step-over
  • Faster speeds and feeds
    • Titanium 400 SFM
    • 45-75 ipm

Machining tips:

  • Use High Pressure Coolant:
    • Helps avoid chip packing
    • Controls heat
    • Eliminates thermal shock
  • Avoid too many flutes in heavy cuts
  • Control heat by reducing width of cut
    • 100% width = 180-degree cut = 50% time in the cut
    • 50% width = 90-degree cut = 25% time in the cut
    • 25% width = 60-degree cut = 17% time in the cut
  • Trochoidal machining techniques
    • Slotting that acts like profiling
    • Great for high temp alloys
      • Hard metal machining
      • Titanium
      • Nickel Alloys
    • Tool diameters of 50% to 62% of slot width
    • Depth of cut (Z) = 1.5 to 2 x tool diameter
    • Width (X,Y Step) = 3 to 10%
